In the first Dragon Quest (1986), the hero reaches the Dragonlord deep in his castle. Before they fight, the Dragonlord says he has been waiting for a young man like him, makes this offer, and asks, "What say you? Will you join me?" If the hero answers yes, his adventure ends right there.
In the game, the hero's name appears where おまえ is, but the line is widely known as 「世界の半分をお前にやろう」. In the Famicom version, saying yes gets the hero "the world of darkness", the screen goes dark and the game cannot go on; in the remakes, it turns out to be a bad dream. Dragon Quest Builders is set in a world where the hero said yes. It may also be used as a joke when offering someone a share of something to win them over.
•「もし〜ば」= if ~. •「わし」= I, used by old men or rulers in stories. •「みかた」= 味方, ally, someone on your side. •「やろう」= volitional form of やる: "I will give"; やる is giving to someone below you.
やる (to give) is used only toward someone below you, or for animals and plants. Saying 〜をやろう to a guest or a superior sounds very arrogant; use あげる or さしあげる instead.
