In Dragon Quest III, the hero's party finally defeats the Archfiend Zoma, who rules the dark world of Alefgard. As he dies, Zoma praises the hero for beating him and says this. He goes on, "I can see it," says someone will rise from the darkness again, but by then the hero will be old and no longer alive, and dies laughing.
After the battle, the hero receives the title of Loto, and the story turns out to lead into the first Dragon Quest, where the Dragonlord covers the world in darkness. Zoma's last words foretell this, and fans see them as a symbol of the Loto trilogy (I to III). In the Famicom version the text is written in kana. It may also be quoted when saying that good and bad always come together.
