At the end of the 2006 anime film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Chiaki Mamiya, who has to go back to the future, comes back to the crying Makoto Konno and leaves her with these last words. I'll be there soon. I'll run there.").

Chiaki came from the future, so the line works as both a farewell and a promise. It is one of the best-known lines from Mamoru Hosoda's films. Couples or friends who must part may also quote it, a little dramatically.

•「未来で」= in the future (で marks the place where an action happens). •「待ってる」= casual form of 待っている, "am waiting / will be waiting".

Use で, not に, for the place where you wait: 駅で待ってる (I'll wait at the station). 待っている can also refer to the future, so 未来で待ってる means "I will be waiting".
