In Howl's Moving Castle, the wizard Howl moans this after his hair changes color. Sophie had cleaned the bathroom and moved his bottles of hair spells around, so when Howl comes out of his bath, his golden hair has turned a strange color. In despair he oozes green slime, and Sophie, who has never felt beautiful, cries and runs out into the rain.
In this 2004 Studio Ghibli film, the scene shows how vain and childish the handsome Howl can be, and fans remember his over-the-top despair. The line is often quoted as 美しくなければ…, but the official film comic has 美しくなかったら. It may also be quoted jokingly after a bad haircut.
•「もう終わりだ」= it's all over. •「美しくなかったら」= if (I) am not beautiful (〜なかったら = negative + if). •「生きていたって」= even if I go on living (〜たって = casual "even if"). •「仕方がない」= there is no point.
生きていたって is not the past tense "I was living". Here 〜たって means "even if", so 生きていたって仕方がない means "even if I live, it's pointless".
