Scene in the Original Work:
At the end of the 2006 anime film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Chiaki Mamiya, who has to go back to the future, comes back to the crying Makoto Konno and leaves her with these last words. Makoto answers, 「うん。すぐ行く。走って行く」 ("Yeah. I'll be there soon. I'll run there.").
日本語で読む
2006年のアニメ映画『時をかける少女』のラストで、未来へ帰らなければならない間宮千昭が、泣いている紺野真琴のもとへ戻ってきて、最後にこの言葉を残す。真琴は「うん。すぐ行く。走って行く」と答える。
Cultural Context:
Chiaki came from the future, so the line works as both a farewell and a promise. It is one of the best-known lines from Mamoru Hosoda's films. Couples or friends who must part may also quote it, a little dramatically.
日本語で読む
千昭は未来から来た人物なので、この言葉は別れであり、約束でもある。細田守監督作品の中でも、特によく知られたセリフの一つ。離ればなれになる恋人や友達同士で、少し芝居がかって引用することもある。
Grammar & Learning Points
Grammar Point
•「未来で」= in the future (で marks the place where an action happens). •「待ってる」= casual form of 待っている, "am waiting / will be waiting".
日本語で読む
•「未来で」の「で」は動作をする場所を表す。•「待ってる」は「待っている」のくだけた形。
Trap for English Speakers
Use で, not に, for the place where you wait: 駅で待ってる (I'll wait at the station). 待っている can also refer to the future, so 未来で待ってる means "I will be waiting".
日本語で読む
待つ場所には「に」ではなく「で」を使い、「駅で待ってる」と言う。「待っている」は未来のことにも使えるので、「未来で待ってる」は「これから待っている」という意味になる。
