Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In the short story 「ウルトラスーパー電池」 (Ultra Super Battery), Nobita breaks a light bulb at home. Since it is about the same size, he tries to cover it up by fitting a rubber ball into the socket instead. Doraemon, completely fed up, says this with a blank face. He then offers a flashlight, and when Nobita says it is too dark, he brings out the Ultra Super Battery.

短編「ウルトラスーパー電池」。家の電球を割ってしまったのび太は、大きさが同じだからと、代わりにゴムボールを取りつけてごまかそうとする。ドラえもんは心底あきれた真顔でこう言い放つ。そのあと懐中電灯を出すが、のび太が暗いと言うので、「ウルトラスーパー電池」を出してあげる。

Cultural Context:

The story first ran in the July 1978 issue of the magazine Shogaku Ninensei (for second graders) and is collected in volume 6 of the Doraemon color collection (カラー作品集). It is a minor story, but the panel of Doraemon's deadpan face spread online as ASCII art from the early days of the Internet, and the line became slang for teasing a thoughtless remark. The original is written all in hiragana, and it is also written 君はじつにバカだな and so on. The catchphrase of the UTAU voicebank Kasane Teto, 「君はじつに馬鹿だな」, is said to come from this line. It may also be used as a joke between close friends, but it can easily hurt.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「きみ」= you (casual, to an equal or junior). •「じつに」= truly, really (実に; a slightly stiff adverb). •「ばか」= fool, idiot. •「だな」= plain copula だ + な, a remark half to oneself, as if confirming it.
日本語で読む
•「きみ」は対等や目下の相手への二人称。•「じつに」は「実に」で、「本当に」のやや硬い言い方。•「ばか」は愚かな人。•「だな」は断定の「だ」に「な」がついた、自分で確かめるような言い方。

Trap for English Speakers

Said seriously, ばか is much stronger than "silly" in English, and calling someone ばか to their face can start a fight. じつに is close to written language, so pairing it with ばか gives the line a cold, calm tone, which is what makes it funny. In Kansai, あほ is the usual word, and ばか can sound harsher there.
日本語で読む
「ばか」は本気で言うと、英語の silly よりずっと強く、面と向かって言うとけんかになることもある。「じつに」は書き言葉に近い硬い副詞なので、「ばか」と組み合わせると冷静に突き放したような響きになり、そこがおかしさにつながっている。関西では「あほ」が普通で、「ばか」の方がきつく聞こえることもある。
