Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In the first story, set in 1958, Nango owes money to the yakuza and is playing mahjong with his life at stake. Thirteen-year-old Shigeru Akagi takes his seat, beats the underground pro Yagi, and Nango's ¥3 million debt is wiped out. But Akagi doesn't stop. He puts that whole ¥3 million on a side bet for one more game and says this. Nango is stunned.

物語の最初のエピソード(1958年)。ヤクザへの借金で命がけの麻雀を打つ南郷に代わり、13歳の赤木しげるが卓につく。裏プロの矢木に勝ち、南郷の借金300万円は帳消しになる。しかしアカギはやめず、「チャラになった南郷さんの借金三百万 それをそっくりサシ馬に乗せてもう一勝負……!」と言って、このセリフを続ける。南郷はあ然とする。

Cultural Context:

Akagi is Nobuyuki Fukumoto's mahjong manga about the youth of Shigeru Akagi, the legendary player from his earlier manga Ten. Akagi wins the next game too and asks to double again, and the yakuza bring in the blind pro Ichikawa. Raising the stakes while he is winning, not to win back losses, is typical of Akagi. 倍プッシュ spread beyond mahjong as a word for doubling a bet, and it may also be used as a joke, for example when ordering a double helping.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「倍」= double, twice as much. •「プッシュ」= push, from English; here, pushing the bet higher. •「だ」= plain copula, "it's ~". •「…!」= a pause, then a quiet but strong finish, typical of Fukumoto's manga.
日本語で読む
•「倍」は二倍。•「プッシュ」は英語の push で、ここでは賭け金を押し上げること。•「だ」は断定の助動詞。•「…!」は間をおいて静かに力強く言い切る、福本作品らしい表記。

Trap for English Speakers

倍 alone means "double", but after a number it means "times": 3倍 = three times. 倍プッシュ is slang that spread from the manga, not a real term; in normal Japanese, say 倍にする or 倍賭けする.
日本語で読む
「倍」単独では「二倍」だが、数字がつくと「3倍」のように「〜倍」の意味になる。「倍プッシュ」は漫画から広まった言葉で、正式な用語ではない。普通は「倍にする」「倍賭けする」と言う。
