Cultural Context:

Kiteretsu Daihyakka is a manga by Fujiko F. Fujio, and its anime ran on Fuji TV from 1988 to 1996. Korosuke is a samurai-style karakuri robot with a topknot who calls himself ワガハイ and ends his sentences with ナリ. In the anime, he loves croquettes (コロッケ) and carries a sword on his back. This title is known as the standard form of his self-introduction, but the exact scene where he says it word for word is uncertain. It may also be used as a playful self-introduction with your own name.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「ワガハイ」= 吾輩, an old, pompous "I", famous from Soseki's novel 吾輩は猫である (I Am a Cat). •「は」= topic particle. •「コロ助」= his name; 〜助 is an old-fashioned ending for male names. •「ナリ」= Korosuke's verbal tic, from the classical copula なり (= です/である).
日本語で読む
•「ワガハイ」は「吾輩」で、古風でいばった一人称。夏目漱石の『吾輩は猫である』で有名。•「は」は主題を示す助詞。•「コロ助」は名前で、「〜助」は昔の男性の名前によくある形。•「ナリ」はコロ助の口癖で、古語の断定の助動詞「なり」(=です・である)から。

Trap for English Speakers

ナリ is not used in modern speech; put it at the end of a sentence and you sound like Korosuke. ワガハイ is also only for jokes or characters; in a normal self-introduction, say 私は〇〇です. The classical なり is a copula, but Korosuke adds ナリ to almost any sentence, even after verbs, as in 行くナリ.
日本語で読む
「ナリ」は現代の会話では使わず、文末につけるとコロ助のまねに聞こえる。「ワガハイ」も冗談やキャラクター用で、普通の自己紹介では「私は〇〇です」と言う。古語の「なり」は断定の助動詞だが、コロ助は「行くナリ」のように動詞のあとなど、どんな文にも「ナリ」をつける。
