Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

Until October 1991, every Sazae-san next-episode preview ended like this. After saying 「来週もまた見てくださいね」 (Please watch again next week), Sazae tosses a snack into the air and catches it in her mouth, but it gets stuck in her throat and she makes this choking sound. From the broadcast of October 20, 1991, rock-paper-scissors took its place.

1991年10月まで、『サザエさん』の次回予告はいつもこの形で終わっていた。「来週もまた見てくださいね」と言ったサザエさんが、お菓子を空中に放り投げて口で受け止めるが、のどに詰まらせてこの声を出す。1991年10月20日の放送からは、じゃんけんに変わった。

Cultural Context:

Sazae is said to be good at tossing peanuts into the air and eating them, and this gag played on that. It was dropped after doctors warned that children copying it could choke, and the staff talked it over and chose rock-paper-scissors instead. Since it is only a voice, the spelling varies widely: ンガググ, んがぐぐ, ンガックック and more. Some say she is actually saying 「つまっちゃった」 (it got stuck) while choking, but this is not confirmed. It may also be used as a joke when you nearly choke on food.

サザエさんにはピーナッツの投げ食いが得意という設定があり、このギャグはそれを生かしたもの。子どもがまねすると喉に詰まって危ないという医師の声が寄せられ、スタッフが話し合ってじゃんけんに変えた。声だけのギャグなので、「ンガググ」「んがぐぐ」「ンガックック」など表記はさまざま。喉を詰まらせながら「つまっちゃった」と言っているという説もあるが、確かではない。食べ物を喉に詰まらせかけたときに、冗談で使うこともある。

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「ン」= a nasal hum, the sound of food stopping in the throat. •「ガッ」= a sudden gagging sound; the small ッ cuts it short. •「クック」= short gasps, repeated. • Not a word but a voice like an onomatopoeia, written in katakana.
日本語で読む
•「ン」は、のどで食べ物が止まったときの鼻にかかった音。•「ガッ」は急にむせる音で、小さい「ッ」が音を短く切る。•「クック」は短く息がつまる音のくり返し。•言葉ではなく擬音のような声で、カタカナで書かれている。

Trap for English Speakers

This is not a real word. To say you choked, use 喉に詰まる or むせる, as in お餅が喉に詰まった (the mochi got stuck in my throat). In Japan, people choke on mochi every New Year, so this gag is not one to copy for real.
日本語で読む
実在の単語ではない。「喉に詰まる」「むせる」を使い、「お餅が喉に詰まった」のように言う。日本では毎年お正月にお餅を喉に詰まらせる事故が起きるので、このギャグを本当にまねするのは危ない。
