In Dragon Quest III (1988), the masked thief Kandata, already beaten once at the Tower of Shanpane, kidnaps Tania, a girl from the town of Baharata, and holds her in his cave hideout east of the town. When the hero beats him a second time, he begs for mercy with this line. Choosing "No" only makes him beg again, so the hero ends up letting him go.

At the first fight in the Tower of Shanpane, the beaten Kandata begs in almost the same way: 「まいった! His pushy "Na! Na!" and a promise to reform that nobody believes made him a well-loved comic villain. People may also use the line, half-jokingly, when apologizing after making the same mistake again.

•「たのむ!」= "I beg you!" •「これっきり」= "after this, never again". •「こころを いれかえる」= 心を入れ替える, an idiom for "to reform, turn over a new leaf". な!」= "Right? Right?", pushing the listener to agree.
