Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In Dragon Quest III (1988), the masked thief Kandata, already beaten once at the Tower of Shanpane, kidnaps Tania, a girl from the town of Baharata, and holds her in his cave hideout east of the town. When the hero beats him a second time, he begs for mercy with this line. Choosing "No" only makes him beg again, so the hero ends up letting him go.

Cultural Context:

At the first fight in the Tower of Shanpane, the beaten Kandata begs in almost the same way: 「まいった! His pushy "Na! Na!" and a promise to reform that nobody believes made him a well-loved comic villain. People may also use the line, half-jokingly, when apologizing after making the same mistake again.
