Near the end of Howl's Moving Castle, the war reaches the town and bombs fall near Sophie's old hat shop, where the castle door now opens. Sophie asks Howl to run away instead of fighting. Howl answers "Why?" and then says this line to her. He then turns into a bird-like creature and flies off to fight, and Sophie decides to move the castle so he will not have to protect it.
