In the original manga of The Rose of Versailles, on July 14, 1789, Oscar, who lost her beloved André the day before, leads the French Guards on the people's side in the attack on the Bastille. She is shot by the fortress's soldiers. Dying, she sees the white flag of surrender rise over the Bastille and says this with her last breath.

Oscar was raised as a man to be the heir of a noble family and served as a Royal Guard officer protecting Marie Antoinette, but in the end she sided with the people in the French Revolution. Her death is one of the most famous scenes in shojo manga. The TV anime changes it: she dies about an hour before the Bastille falls, and her last word is 「アデュー」 (adieu). The pattern 「〇〇ばんざい」 may also be used, half-jokingly, to cheer for something you love.

In English, "banzai" may sound like a war cry or a reckless charge. In Japanese, ばんざい is mainly a cheer of joy, shouted with both arms raised at elections, weddings and other celebrations.
