Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In Dragon Quest IV (1990), a slime lives in a basement in the village of Komizu. When the hero talks to it, the timid slime does not attack but pleads with this line. It is one of the friendly slimes who live in towns and villages and talk to people, rather than a monster to fight.

Cultural Context:

The short form 「ボク わるいスライムじゃないよ」 became one of the most famous lines of the series; in DQ4 another slime in Santeem also starts with it. It has been reused in later games, for example in a photo frame of the 3DS DQ8, and Rimuru in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime gives a greeting that echoes it. People may also say it, half-jokingly, to show they mean no harm.
