Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

At the end of Chapter 1 of DEATH NOTE, Light Yagami, the high school student who picked up the Death Note, tells the death god Ryuk that he will become the god of a new world. Ryuk, who had dropped the notebook into the human world just because he was bored, sees Light's huge ambition and says this line. From then on, Ryuk follows Light and enjoys watching him like a show.

『DEATH NOTE』第1話の最後、デスノートを拾った高校生・夜神月は、死神リュークに「新世界の神となる」と言い放つ。退屈しのぎにノートを人間界へ落としたリュークは、そのとほうもない野望を見て、こう口にする。以後リュークは月のそばで、その行く末を見世物のように楽しんでいく。

Cultural Context:

It is from Chapter 1 of the manga (Volume 1), and it sums up Ryuk's character: he is neither Light's friend nor his enemy, but simply an onlooker who wants to be entertained. In the anime (Episode 1) he says it as "面白っ". Fans may also quote it, half-jokingly, when they are amazed at someone's strange behavior.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「やっぱり」= as I thought, after all. •「〜って」= a casual topic marker, like は. •「面白」= 面白い with the い dropped, which sounds excited and very casual.
日本語で読む
•「やっぱり」は「思ったとおり」。•「〜って」は「は」のくだけた言い方で、話題を示す。•「面白」は「面白い」の「い」を落とした形で、興奮した気持ちを表すくだけた言い方。

Trap for English Speakers

面白い means both "funny" and "interesting". Ryuk means "fascinating", not "funny". Also, dropping the い (面白!, すご!, うま!) is only for casual speech.
日本語で読む
「面白い」には「おかしくて笑える」と「興味をひかれる」の両方の意味がある。リュークは後者の意味で言っている。また「面白!」「すご!」のように「い」を落とすのは、くだけた話し言葉だけ。
