English Translation:
Old man, when did you get here?!
Original Scene & Cultural Context
Scene in the Original Work:
In Dragon Quest VIII (2004), King Trode, who has been turned into a small green monster, keeps popping up right beside the party without anyone noticing. Each time, Yangus jumps in surprise, strikes a startled pose and yells this. It happens again and again during story events in the first half of the game, even in tense scenes.
日本語で読む
『ドラゴンクエストVIII』で、魔物の姿に変えられたトロデ王がいつの間にか一行のすぐそばに現れると、ヤンガスが飛び上がって驚き、こう叫ぶ。物語前半のイベントで何度もくり返され、緊迫した場面にも差しこまれるお約束のやりとりになっている。
Cultural Context:
Yangus, a former bandit, calls the king "ossan" (old man) without any respect, and this sudden-appearance gag became one of the best-known running jokes of DQ8. Some scenes add "Geh!" or write いつの間に in kanji, and later in the story Yangus even grumbles that he is tired of saying it. Fans may say it, half-jokingly, when someone shows up unnoticed.
日本語で読む
元山賊のヤンガスは王様を遠慮なく「おっさん」と呼び、この神出鬼没ネタはDQ8を代表するお約束になった。場面によっては「げっ!」がついたり、「いつの間に」と漢字で書かれたりする。物語の後半には、ヤンガス自身が言い飽きたとぼやく場面もある。気づかないうちに人が来ていたとき、冗談でまねすることもある。
Grammar & Learning Points
Grammar Point
•「おっさん」= a casual, rather rude word for a middle-aged man ("old man", "mister"). •「いつのまに」= "when did (you) ...?", with the verb (来た, came) left out to show surprise.
日本語で読む
•「おっさん」は中年の男性をくだけて(やや失礼に)呼ぶ言葉。•「いつのまに」は「いつの間に来たんだ」の後半を省いた形で、「知らないうちに」という驚きを表す。
Trap for English Speakers
Calling someone おっさん to their face is rude unless you are very close. It only sounds funny here because Yangus and Trode are a comic duo.
日本語で読む
「おっさん」は親しくない相手や目上の人に使うと失礼。ヤンガスとトロデ王のような気安い間柄だから笑いになる。
