Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In episode 127 of the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, 「逆転!稲妻の戦士」, Jonouchi is dueling Yami Marik, who summons the Winged Dragon of Ra. In the next-episode preview, Anzu cries that if Ra burns Jonouchi's monster, his mind will burn out too, and begs him not to die. Then, in a bright voice, she announces the next title and ends with this line.

アニメ『遊☆戯☆王デュエルモンスターズ』第127話「逆転!稲妻の戦士」。城之内は闇マリクと決闘し、マリクはラーの翼神竜を呼び出す。そのあとの次回予告で、杏子は「お願い、死なないで城之内!」と必死に呼びかける。ところが最後は明るい声で、次回のタイトルを告げてこう締めくくる。

Cultural Context:

Episode 128 really was titled 「城之内死す」 (Jonouchi Dies), so the preview gave away the result. With the gap between Anzu's desperate pleas and her cheerful title call, it is talked about as the classic spoiler preview. In the episode, Jonouchi does not actually die: he survives Ra's attack but collapses just before he can attack, and loses. The preview was cut from the 2016 HD remaster, but when official channels streamed it uncut in 2024 and 2025, it became a hot topic on social media. It may also be used as a joke to announce an ending everyone can see coming.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「次回」= next time, the next episode. •「城之内死す」= Jonouchi dies; 死す is an old written form of 死ぬ, typical of titles and headlines. •「デュエルスタンバイ」= "duel standby", the show's set phrase to close the preview.

•「次回」は次の回のこと。•「死す」は「死ぬ」の古い書き言葉で、タイトルや見出しらしい言い方。•「デュエルスタンバイ」は予告を締める、この作品の決まり文句。

Trap for English Speakers

死す is not used in conversation; say 死ぬ. In titles and headlines, short old forms like this sound dramatic. Also, in the English dub, Jonouchi is known as Joey Wheeler and Anzu as Téa Gardner.
