In the first Resident Evil (1996), Chris or Jill, trapped in a mansion in the woods, finds the diary of a keeper who looked after the creatures there. After an accident at the lab, his entries talk about itching and fever, and his writing slowly falls apart. In the last entry, he writes that he killed his colleague Scott and that he was "tasty", and the diary ends with only these words.

Online it is shortened to かゆうま, so many people believe the original is 「かゆ うま」, but it is 「かゆい うま」. The diary was also recreated in the 2021 film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. It may also be used as a joke when your writing falls apart from sleepiness or exhaustion.
