Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In episode 22 of the first season, Euphemia holds the opening ceremony of the Special Administrative Zone of Japan, where Japanese people may call themselves Japanese again. Just before, while Lelouch is talking with her, his Geass goes out of control, and the words "kill the Japanese", which he never meant as an order, take hold of her. Controlled by the Geass, she says this to the gathered Japanese and orders the soldiers to kill them. The ceremony turns into a massacre.

第1期第22話。ユーフェミアは、日本人が再び日本人を名乗れる「行政特区日本」の式典を開く。その直前、彼女と話していたルルーシュのギアスが暴走し、命令のつもりのなかった「日本人を殺せ」という言葉が彼女にかかってしまう。ギアスに操られたユーフェミアは、集まった日本人にこう告げ、兵士たちに虐殺を命じる。式典は惨劇の場となる。

Cultural Context:

Euphemia li Britannia is the third princess of Britannia, Lelouch's half-sister, and the princess who made Suzaku her knight. The zone was her own kind-hearted plan for peace, and Lelouch had just decided to accept it, which makes the turn all the more cruel. The episode is titled 血染めのユフィ (Bloodstained Euphie), and in R2 she is remembered as 虐殺皇女 (the Massacre Princess). The gap between the polite request and its horrible content made this one of the most shocking scenes in anime, and fans still talk about it. It should never be used toward real people, even as a joke.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「名乗る」= to call oneself, to give one's name as. •「日本人を名乗る皆さん」= everyone who calls themselves Japanese (a clause before a noun). •「お願いがあります」= I have a request (a polite opener). •「死んで頂けないでしょうか」= a very polite request: 〜て頂く (humbly receive a favor) → 頂けない (can't I receive) + でしょうか.
日本語で読む
•「名乗る」は自分の名前や身分を名乗ること。•「日本人を名乗る皆さん」は、名詞の前に説明がつく形。•「お願いがあります」は丁寧な頼みごとの前置き。•「死んで頂けないでしょうか」は、「〜て頂く」の可能形の否定に「でしょうか」をつけた、とても丁寧な依頼。

Trap for English Speakers

The horror comes from the gap between the very polite form and the content. 〜て頂けないでしょうか itself is a useful, very polite request at work, as in ご確認頂けないでしょうか (Could you please check it?). When 頂く follows a verb's て-form, it is usually written in hiragana as いただく.
日本語で読む
恐ろしさは、とても丁寧な言い方と内容との落差から生まれている。「〜て頂けないでしょうか」自体は、「ご確認頂けないでしょうか」のように仕事でも使える、丁寧な依頼の形。動詞のて形のあとの「頂く」は、ひらがなで「いただく」と書くのが一般的。
