At the end of the 1979 film Galaxy Express 999, Tetsuro Hoshino's journey is over, and Maetel leaves him behind on the 999. At their parting, she calls herself the "phantom of youth" who lived in his boyhood heart. As Tetsuro runs after the departing train, the narrator closes the film with these words.

The film is based on Leiji Matsumoto's manga, and its ending is remembered as a farewell to childhood itself. 「青春の幻影」 (phantom of youth) is Maetel's own phrase, but it is sometimes remembered mixed with this narration, as if it were one line. The pattern 「さらば〇〇」 may also be used, half-jokingly, when leaving a school, a job or a habit.

•「さらば」= farewell, an old and literary word for goodbye. •「少年の日」= the days of boyhood (日 here means days or a time of life). • Three 「さらば〜」 in a row give the line its rhythm.

さらば sounds dramatic and old-fashioned. In daily life people say じゃあね or さようなら; saying さらば to a friend sounds like a joke.
