In episode 2, enemies attack the fleet, and Basara, the singer of the rock band Fire Bomber, takes off in his Valkyrie, flies into the battle and starts to sing. When Gamlin, fighting to defend the fleet, tells him this is a combat zone, Basara answers, "Fighting is stupid! Listen to my song!" The enemy commander Gigil tries to drain Basara's spirit energy, but it doesn't work, and he retreats.
Macross 7 (1994-95) is known for a hero who never fights: Basara flies his VF-19 Kai "Fire Valkyrie" into battle only to stop it with his songs. The line also closes the next-episode previews and is his signature phrase. The official site writes it 俺の歌を聞け!, but 聴け and stretched forms such as 聞けぇ! are also common. Basara's speaking voice is Nobutoshi Canna, and his singing voice is Yoshiki Fukuyama. It may also be used jokingly when you grab the mic at karaoke.
•「俺の」= my (rough, masculine). •「歌」= song. •「聞け」= imperative of 聞く (to listen); a blunt command.
聞く and 聴く are both read きく; 聴く stresses listening carefully, as to music, so both spellings are seen for this line. The bare imperative 聞け is very rude in real life; say 聞いて or 聞いてください.
