原作での使用シーン・文化的な背景
使用シーン:
『メタルギアソリッド2』(2001年)のタンカー編の冒頭。ソリッド・スネークは雨の夜のジョージ・ワシントン橋を走り、ステルス迷彩で姿を隠して、下を通るタンカーへ飛び降りる。甲板に降り立って姿を現したスネークが、プレイヤーに語りかけるようにこう言う。
At the start of the Tanker chapter of Metal Gear Solid 2 (2001), Solid Snake runs across the George Washington Bridge on a rainy night and, hidden by stealth camouflage, jumps down onto a tanker below. Landing on the deck and showing himself, Snake says this line as if speaking to the player.
文化的な背景:
『メタルギア』は小島秀夫が手がけたステルスゲームのシリーズで、日本語版ではスネークの声を大塚明夫が演じる。この「待たせたな」はその後シリーズの決めゼリフとなり、『グラウンド・ゼロズ』の冒頭ではビッグ・ボスも口にする。スネークが参戦した『大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX』(2008年)でも使われた。遅れて登場したときや、久しぶりに戻ってきたときに、冗談で使うこともある。
Metal Gear is Hideo Kojima's stealth game series, and Akio Otsuka voices Snake in Japanese. After MGS2, the line became a signature of the series; at the opening of Ground Zeroes, Big Boss says it too. It was also used in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008), where Snake appears. It may also be used jokingly when you show up late or make a dramatic return.
英訳文法・学習のポイント
英訳文法のポイント
•「待たせる」は「待つ」の使役形で、相手を待たせること。•「待たせた」はその過去形。•「な」は文末の終助詞で、ここではくだけた男っぽい念押しの響き。
•「待たせる」= to make someone wait (causative of 待つ). •「待たせた」= past tense: I made you wait. •「な」= sentence-ending particle; here a casual, masculine tone, like "huh."
英訳の注意ポイント
謝罪の言葉ではない。本当に謝るなら「お待たせしました」「待たせてごめん」と言う。「待たせたな」は「待ちかねただろう、来てやったぞ」という余裕のある響きなので、仕事で遅れたときに使うとふざけて聞こえる。
This is not an apology. To really apologize, say お待たせしました or 待たせてごめん. 待たせたな sounds cool and self-confident, like "Here I am," so using it at work when you are late would sound flippant.
