原作での使用シーン・文化的な背景

使用シーン:

『北斗の拳』で、聖帝サウザーが聖帝十字陵でケンシロウと最後の戦いをする。体の秘密を見破られて追いつめられたサウザーは、この言葉で自分をふるい立たせて立ち上がり、逆立ちから跳んで最後の技を放つが、ケンシロウの拳に致命傷を受ける。
In Fist of the North Star, Souther, the Holy Emperor, fights Kenshiro for the last time at his Holy Cross Mausoleum. Kenshiro has seen through the secret of his body, and Souther is losing. Still, he gets up shouting this line, then leaps from a handstand for a final attack, but is fatally wounded by Kenshiro.

文化的な背景:

原作では「ひ…退かぬ!!媚びぬ省みぬ!!帝王に逃走はないのだーー!!」と続く。三つの短い言葉で、サウザーの誇り高い生き方を表した名ゼリフで、この部分だけが引用されることが多い。何があってもあきらめない気持ちを、冗談まじりに表すときに使うこともある。
In the original it continues: 「ひ…退かぬ!!媚びぬ省みぬ!!帝王に逃走はないのだーー!!」 (An emperor does not run away!). The three short verbs show Souther's proud way of life, and the phrase is often quoted alone. It may also be used, half-jokingly, to show that you won't give up.

英訳文法・学習のポイント

英訳文法のポイント

•「退く」はここでは「ひく」と読み、後ろへ下がること。•「媚びる」は相手に気に入られようとすること。•「省みる」は自分の行いを振り返ること。•「ぬ」は古い打ち消しで「ない」と同じ。
•「退く」= to retreat, read ひく here. •「媚びる」= to flatter, to bow to someone. •「省みる」= to reflect on oneself. •「ぬ」= old-style negative, the same as 「ない」.

英訳の注意ポイント

「退く」は「ひく」「しりぞく」「のく」と読める。「省みる」(自分を反省する)と「顧みる」(振り返る・気にかける)は同じ読みで意味が違う。「省く(はぶく)」は取り除くこと。
退く can be read ひく, しりぞく or のく. 省みる (reflect on yourself) and 顧みる (look back on, care about) sound the same but differ in meaning; 省く (はぶく) means to leave out.
