In a case of strange deaths in an old, distinguished family, Conan and Heiji Hattori corner the culprit with their deductions. The culprit tries to die by fire with hidden gasoline, but the two had secretly switched it for water. As the culprit breaks down crying, Heiji murmurs that maybe they should have let the culprit die, and Conan answers with this line.
Behind this line is the Moonlight Sonata murder case in volume 7 of the manga. There, the exposed culprit, Narumi Asai, set fire to the community hall, pushed Conan out of the burning building when he tried to stop it, and died in the flames while playing the piano. Since then, never letting a culprit die has become one of Conan's strongest beliefs as a detective. It may also be quoted when talking about the responsibility of those who expose others' wrongdoing.
•「推理で」= by deduction (で = means). •「追い詰める」= to corner. •「みすみす」= letting something bad happen though you could have stopped it.
〜させる here does not mean making someone do it on purpose; it can also mean letting something happen. 〜ちまう (〜てしまう) adds regret, and みすみす stresses that it could have been prevented.
