Original Scene & Cultural Context
Scene in the Original Work:
In chapter 1 (episode 1 of the anime), the hero's party, having defeated the Demon King, watches a meteor shower that comes once every 50 years and promises to see it together again. Fifty years later, the elf Frieren watches it with Himmel, now an old man, and he dies soon after. At his funeral, some call her cold for not looking sad. Frieren says she knew nothing about him, then breaks into tears and says this.

Cultural Context:
Frieren is an elf who has lived for over a thousand years, so the ten-year journey with Himmel and the others was only a short moment for her. This regret leads her to set out on a new journey to "know humans", and the story follows that journey. It may also be used, quietly, when you regret not spending more time with someone who has passed away.
