第1話。赤髪海賊団がフーシャ村を去る日。シャンクスは近海の主からルフィを救い、左腕を失っていた。幼いルフィは「自分で仲間を集めて海賊王になる」と宣言する。シャンクスはうれしそうに麦わら帽子をルフィの頭にかぶせ、このセリフを告げる。ルフィは帽子の下で声を殺して泣く。

Cultural Context:

The straw hat becomes Luffy's trademark, and the promise to return it drives the whole story. The hat later turns out to have belonged to the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, before Shanks. By saying 預ける ("leave in your care") instead of あげる ("give"), Shanks makes it a promise to meet again. It may also be quoted, half-jokingly, when lending something precious to someone.

この麦わら帽子はルフィのトレードマークとなり、「いつか返す」という約束が物語全体を動かしていく。のちに、帽子はもともと海賊王ゴール・D・ロジャーのもので、シャンクスが受け継いだものだと分かる。「あげる」ではなく「預ける」と言うことで、再会の約束になっている。大切な物を人に貸すとき、冗談で引用することもある。

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「預ける」= to leave something in someone's care (you expect it back). •「返しに来い」= come and return it (〜に来る = to come to do ~). •「〜になってな」= "once you've become ~" (て-form + な, a soft reminder).
日本語で読む
•「預ける」は返してもらう前提で人に任せること。•「返しに来い」の「〜に来る」は目的を表す。•「〜になってな」は「〜になってから(来い)」というやわらかい念押し。

Trap for English Speakers

預ける does not mean "give". It means you will get it back, as when you leave luggage at a hotel or money at a bank. To give something for good, use あげる.
日本語で読む
「預ける」は「あげる」ではない。ホテルに荷物を預ける、銀行にお金を預けるのように、あとで返してもらう前提の言い方。完全に渡すときは「あげる」を使う。
