During the war, Seita and his little sister Setsuko live alone in a cave shelter. One night they catch fireflies and let them light up their mosquito net. The next morning the fireflies are dead, and Setsuko buries them and asks her brother this.

Cultural Context:
In the same scene, Setsuko reveals she already knows their mother has died. The fireflies' short lives overlap with the lives lost in the war, and with what happens to the children. The title 火垂る refers to these fireflies. It is a line remembered as one of the saddest in Japanese animation.
