Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In a flashback in SLAM DUNK, Coach Anzai watches, alone, a video of his former player Tanizawa sent from America and murmurs this. In his university days Anzai was a harsh coach feared as the "White-Haired Devil", and Tanizawa, rebelling against him, had gone to the U.S. on his own. On the tape Tanizawa plays with confidence, but he has not improved at all. Tanizawa later dies in an accident.

Cultural Context:

The original scene is a sad one, but online the line became a widely used meme for teasing a person or thing that keeps repeating the same mistakes, and many who use it do not know the story behind it. It may also be said jokingly about one's own failures.
