Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In the Inter-High match against the champion Sannoh, Sakuragi chases a loose ball, crashes into a table and badly hurts his back. He is carried to the bench, and Haruko comes down from the stands. He remembers how she first asked him "Do you like basketball?" and he lied, "I love it." He stands up, says this to her, and goes back on the court.

Cultural Context:

In chapter 1, Sakuragi hated basketball and said 大好きです only to win Haruko's heart. This line answers that lie near the end of the story, and it is often listed among the best lines in SLAM DUNK. It may also be used, half-jokingly, when you have truly come to like something you once only pretended to like.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「大好きです」= I love it (大好き = like very much). •「今度は」= this time (unlike before). •「〜っす」= a casual, sporty form of です, used by young men toward seniors.

Trap for English Speakers

Here 大好きです is about basketball, not a love confession to Haruko, though it sounds like one. 〜っす is casual: friendly toward a coach or senior teammate, but not for formal situations.
