Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

Near the end of Castle in the Sky, Muska corners Sheeta inside Laputa and points his gun at her. Pazu arrives and asks to speak with her alone, and Muska gives them three minutes. When the time is up, Muska says this line. Sheeta and Pazu answer by saying the spell of destruction, "Balse!", together, and the crystal's blinding light hits Muska.

『天空の城ラピュタ』の終盤、ラピュタの中でムスカがシータを追いつめ、銃を向けている。駆けつけたパズーが二人だけで話をさせてほしいと頼むと、ムスカは「3分間待ってやる」と言う。約束の時間が来て、ムスカはこう告げる。直後、シータとパズーは滅びの言葉「バルス」を唱え、飛行石の光がムスカの目を焼く。

Cultural Context:

It is the line just before "Balse!", one of the most famous scenes in Japanese animation. Fans have pointed out that less than three minutes actually pass, and Miyazaki's storyboard notes say Muska was out of bullets and used the time to reload. It may also be said, half-jokingly, when a deadline for a decision has come.

日本アニメ屈指の名場面「バルス」の直前のセリフ。実際には3分もたっていないとファンに指摘されることがあり、宮崎駿の絵コンテには、ムスカは弾が切れていて、その間に弾を込めていたという注釈がある。返事の期限が来たときに、冗談めかして言うこともある。

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「時間だ」= it is time (the time limit has come). •「答え」= an answer. •「聞こう」= the volitional form of 聞く, here "I will hear", a one-sided, superior tone.
日本語で読む
•「時間だ」は「約束の時間が来た」という意味。•「答え」は返事・返答。•「聞こう」は「聞く」の意志形で、ここでは「(私が)聞くことにする」という一方的で上から目線の響き。

Trap for English Speakers

The volitional 〜よう/〜おう often means "let's" (一緒に聞こう = let's listen together), but said alone to someone else it means "I will". Here Muska is not inviting anyone; he is demanding.
日本語で読む
「〜よう/〜おう」は「一緒に聞こう」のように誘いにもなるが、相手に向かって一人で言うと「私が〜する」という意志になる。ここでのムスカは誘っているのではなく、答えを要求している。
