Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In Perman, Mitsuo Suwa (Perman No. 1), who had quit being Perman, rushes to the scene of a flood anyway, and says this when the hero who gave him his powers asks why he came. That hero is called Superman in the original 1967 version and Birdman in later versions. Mitsuo could not tell anyone his secret, so he kept falling asleep after night missions and being scolded at home and at school, and he had quit because it felt so unrewarding.

Cultural Context:

The episode, from the original 1967 series, shows how hard it is to be a hero whose good deeds no one knows about. The line may also be quoted when someone describes a feeling they cannot explain but cannot ignore.
