After the bell test, Kakashi orders Team 7 not to feed Naruto, who is tied to a post as punishment. But Sasuke and Sakura share their lunches with Naruto anyway. Kakashi appears as if furious, then tells them they pass. He explains that he wanted to see teamwork, and says this line.

"Kakashi Gaiden" later reveals these were the words of his late friend Obito Uchiha. On the Kannabi Bridge mission, when their teammate Rin was captured, Kakashi wanted to put the mission first. Obito said this to him and went to save her alone. Kakashi passes Obito's words on to his own students. The second half may also be quoted to someone who leaves a friend behind.
