原作での使用シーン・文化的な背景

使用シーン:

第1話。シンジュクゲットーの戦闘に巻き込まれたルルーシュは、謎の少女C.C.とともに、クロヴィスの親衛隊に追い詰められる。ルルーシュをかばって撃たれたC.C.は、彼と契約してギアスの力を与える。ルルーシュはブリタニア皇子としての本名でこのセリフを命じ、親衛隊は「イエス、ユアハイネス!」と答えて自害する。
In episode 1, Lelouch is caught up in the fighting in the Shinjuku Ghetto. He and the mysterious girl C.C. are cornered by Prince Clovis's royal guard, and C.C. is shot while shielding him. She makes a contract with him and gives him the power of Geass. Lelouch gives this order using his real name as a prince of Britannia. The soldiers answer, "Yes, Your Highness!" and kill themselves.

文化的な背景:

ギアスをかけるときの決まり文句で、作中では最後の命令を変えて何度も使われる(「お前達は私の奴隷となれ!」など)。この場面は、本名を隠して生きてきた元皇子が初めてこの名を名乗り、祖国への反逆を始める瞬間。「〇〇が命じる。宿題を手伝え!」のように、ふざけて命令するときに使うこともある。
This is the set phrase Lelouch uses to cast Geass. He uses it many times in the series and changes the order at the end, as in 「お前達は私の奴隷となれ!」. Here, the exiled prince who had hidden his real name uses it for the first time, as the start of his rebellion against his own country. It may also be used as a joke when giving a playful order, as in 「〇〇が命じる。宿題を手伝え!」.

英訳文法・学習のポイント

英訳文法のポイント

•「命じる」は「命令する」の硬い言い方。•「私が」ではなく自分のフルネームを名乗ることで、王族らしい威厳が出る。•「貴様たち」は相手を強く見下す二人称の複数形。•「死ね」は「死ぬ」の命令形。
•「命じる」= to order, to command (a formal word). • Saying his own full name instead of 私 sounds grand and royal. •「貴様たち」= a very rude "you" (plural). •「死ね」= imperative of 死ぬ (to die).

英訳の注意ポイント

「貴様」はもとは敬意のある言葉だったが、今は相手をひどくののしる言い方。「死ね」は現実では強い暴言なので、冗談で使うときは命令の部分を無害なものに変える。
貴様 was once a respectful word (literally "noble you"), but today it is a very rude way to say "you". 死ね is a harsh curse in real life, so if you quote this line as a joke, change the order to something harmless.
