After taking a powerful shot from Kojiro Hyuga in the face, Nankatsu's goalkeeper Morisaki becomes afraid of the ball and cannot stop even soft shots. Tsubasa blocks an opponent's shot with his own face to show that it does not hurt, then says this to Morisaki. After that, Morisaki starts throwing himself at shots again.

The short form 「ボールは友達」 became the symbol of Tsubasa and of the whole series, and it is known far beyond the manga as a phrase for loving soccer. The spirit behind it is linked to Roberto Hongo, the Brazilian player who taught Tsubasa. It may also be said, half-jokingly, to a child who is afraid of the ball in PE class.

•「AはB」= A is B; here the ball is called a friend (a metaphor). •「こわくない」= not scary (negative of こわい). •「よ」= reassures the listener.

ともだち here is a metaphor, not a real friend. Also, 〜よ said gently sounds kind and reassuring, but said sharply it can sound like you are correcting the other person.
