Scene in the Original Work:
After taking a powerful shot from Kojiro Hyuga in the face, Nankatsu's goalkeeper Morisaki becomes afraid of the ball and cannot stop even soft shots. Tsubasa blocks an opponent's shot with his own face to show that it does not hurt, then says this to Morisaki. After that, Morisaki starts throwing himself at shots again.

日向小次郎の強烈なシュートを顔に受けてから、南葛のゴールキーパー森崎はボールを怖がり、ゆるいシュートも止められなくなる。翼は相手のシュートをあえて顔で受け、痛くないことを見せたうえで、森崎にこの言葉をかける。その後、森崎はシュートに体ごと飛びつけるようになる。
Cultural Context:
The short form 「ボールは友達」 became the symbol of Tsubasa and of the whole series, and it is known far beyond the manga as a phrase for loving soccer. The spirit behind it is linked to Roberto Hongo, the Brazilian player who taught Tsubasa. It may also be said, half-jokingly, to a child who is afraid of the ball in PE class.
