Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In Dragon Ball, Tien Shinhan first uses this move in the semifinal of the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament against Jackie Chun, who is really Master Roshi in disguise. Tien raises his hands beside his face and gives off a blinding flash, so Jackie Chun and the crowd cannot see for a moment. Only Master Shen and the announcer, who wear sunglasses, are not affected.

Cultural Context:

A simple trick that only blinds the enemy, yet very useful. Later Goku, Krillin and even Cell use it too, often to escape. Because it shines, fans sometimes joke about bald heads, but in the story the light comes from ki, not from a shiny head. It may also be shouted jokingly when switching on the lights in a dark room.
