Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In the Cell arc of Dragon Ball, Vegeta fires this move for the first time at Perfect Cell. Cell, sure of his power, chooses not to dodge. Vegeta spreads his arms wide to gather energy, then thrusts both palms forward and fires a huge beam. It blows away a large part of Cell's upper body, but Cell soon regenerates.

『ドラゴンボール』のセル編で、ベジータが完全体のセルに向けて、この大技を初めて放つ。両腕を大きく広げて気を集め、両手のひらを前へ突き出して巨大な光線を撃つ。セルはあえてよけずに受け止め、上半身を大きく吹き飛ばされるが、すぐに再生してしまう。

Cultural Context:

One of Vegeta's signature moves. Unlike Goku's Kamehameha, it starts with both arms spread wide and ends with the palms thrust forward. The name, meaning "last flash", shows Vegeta's pride. It may also be shouted jokingly before a final push in exams or at work.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「ファイナル」= final, from English. •「フラッシュ」= flash, from English. •The small ァ makes the sound "fa"; the small ッ doubles the next consonant (furasshu).
日本語で読む
•「ファイナル」は英語のfinal(最後の)。•「フラッシュ」は英語のflash(閃光)。•小さい「ァ」で「ファ」の音を作り、小さい「ッ」で次の音を詰める。

Trap for English Speakers

Loanwords get extra vowels in Japanese: flash becomes フラッシュ (furasshu), not "furash". Also, ファ uses a small ァ to write a sound Japanese did not originally have.
日本語で読む
外来語は母音が足されて「フラッシュ(ふらっしゅ)」のように読む。また「ファ」は、もともと日本語にない音を小さい「ァ」で表したもの。
