Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In Spirited Away, Chihiro rides the sea train to Swamp Bottom to return the golden seal that Haku stole from Zeniba and to apologize for him. In Zeniba's cottage, Chihiro says she feels she met Haku long ago but cannot remember when, and Zeniba answers with this line. Soon Haku arrives as a dragon, and while flying on his back, Chihiro remembers his real name.

『千と千尋の神隠し』で、千尋はハクが盗んだ契約印を返して謝るため、海原電鉄に乗って沼の底の銭婆の家を訪ねる。銭婆の家で千尋が、ハクとはずっと前に会った気がするのに思い出せないと話すと、銭婆はこう答える。やがて竜の姿のハクが迎えに来て、その背中で千尋はハクの本当の名前を思い出す。

Cultural Context:

Zeniba is the twin sister of the bathhouse witch Yubaba, but she is gentle and wise. This line is often quoted when people discuss memory and the ending of the film: Chihiro seems to forget her adventure, but the hair tie Zeniba made still shines in her hair. It may also be used to comfort someone who cannot recall something from long ago.

銭婆は湯婆婆の双子の姉だが、穏やかで知恵のある魔女として描かれる。千尋は元の世界に戻ると不思議な体験を忘れたように見えるが、銭婆たちが作った髪留めは髪に光っている。そのため、記憶とラストシーンを語るときによく引用される。昔のことを思い出せない人を励ますときに、この言葉を借りることもある。

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「一度あったこと」= something that happened once (あった from ある, to happen). •「〜ものさ」= ものだ (a general truth) + さ, a relaxed, older speaker's tone. •「思い出せないだけで」= "it's just that you can't recall"; the rest of the sentence (覚えている) is left unsaid.
日本語で読む
•「一度あったこと」の「あった」は「ある(起こる)」の過去形。•「〜ものさ」は一般的な真理を表す「ものだ」に「さ」が付いた、年配者らしい気さくな言い方。•「思い出せないだけで」は後ろの「(本当は覚えている)」が省略されている。

Trap for English Speakers

Here あった is from ある (to happen), not 会った (to meet), even though they sound the same. Also, 忘れる (to lose a memory) and 思い出せない (cannot bring it back) are different ideas.
日本語で読む
「あった」は「会った」ではなく「ある(起こる)」の過去形。音が同じなので注意。また「忘れる」(記憶がなくなる)と「思い出せない」(記憶はあるが出てこない)は別のこととして使い分けられている。
