Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In the spirit world, Chihiro's parents have been turned into pigs. Haku tells her that anyone without a job will be turned into an animal, so she must ask for work at the bathhouse. Brought before the owner Yubaba, Chihiro keeps repeating this line, even as Yubaba refuses and threatens her. When their quarrel wakes Yubaba's baby Boh and he starts crying, Yubaba gives in and signs a contract with her.

Cultural Context:

Yubaba has sworn to give work to anyone who asks for it, so Chihiro's only weapon is to keep saying these words. In the contract, Yubaba takes her name and calls her Sen. The line marks the moment the timid Chihiro first stands firm on her own. It may also be used, half-jokingly, when asking for a job or to join a project.
