Shinji, alone and hurt, sits by a ruined lake at dusk. A mysterious boy, Kaworu Nagisa, is sitting there humming "Ode to Joy". He speaks to Shinji with this line, then calls him by his full name.

"Lilin" is Kaworu's word for humans, a hint that he is not human himself. His calm, poetic way of speaking makes this one of Eva's most quoted lines. It may also be used, half-jokingly, to praise a song or karaoke.

•「いいねぇ」= is nice, isn't it (soft, drawn out). •「潤す」= to moisten; here, to refresh the heart. •「極み」= the height, the ultimate.

極み is a strong, slightly literary word for "the very peak". リリン is not a real Japanese word; it is a term from the series.
