Original Scene & Cultural Context
Scene in the Original Work:
Early in the film, when Lord Yupa visits the valley, the blind old Obaba recites this old legend to him, and he laughs it off. At the climax, a girl describes Nausicaa walking on the golden feelers of the Ohmu: "She's wearing a deep blue foreign dress, as if walking in a golden meadow." Obaba recites the legend again and says, "The old legend was true."
日本語で読む
序盤、谷を訪れたユパに、目の見えない大ババ様が古い言い伝えとしてこの一節を語り、ユパは「からかわれては困る」とかわす。クライマックスでは、王蟲の金色の触手の上を歩くナウシカの姿を、少女が「真っ青な異国の服を着て、金色の草原を歩いているみたい」と伝える。大ババ様は再びこの一節を唱え、「古き言い伝えはまことであった」と言う。
Cultural Context:
Nausicaa's dress was red, but it was dyed blue by the blood of a baby Ohmu, so she becomes the figure of the legend without meaning to. The legend continues, "Restoring the lost bond with the earth, at last leading the people to the pure blue land." Its old-fashioned grammar gives it the weight of a myth. It may also be recited as a joke when someone in blue walks across a yellow floor or carpet.

ナウシカの服はもともと赤かったが、王蟲の子の青い体液で染まり、本人の意図しないまま言い伝えの姿になった。言い伝えは「失われし大地との絆を結び、ついに人々を青き清浄の地に導かん」と続く。古めかしい文語が神話のような重みを出している。青い服で黄色い床やじゅうたんの上を歩く人を見て、冗談で唱えることもある。
Grammar & Learning Points
Grammar Point
•「その者」= that person (old, formal style). •「まといて」= old written form of まとって, "wearing". •「降りたつべし」= "shall descend"; べし is a classical ending for what must or will happen.
日本語で読む
•「その者」は「その人」の古い言い方。•「まといて」は「まとって」の文語形。•「べし」は「〜するはずだ・〜すべきだ」を表す古典の助動詞。
Trap for English Speakers
This is classical Japanese, not modern speech. Here 金色 is read こんじき, not きんいろ, which gives it a sacred, temple-like sound.
日本語で読む
現代語ではなく文語。「金色」は「きんいろ」ではなく「こんじき」と読み、神聖な響きになる。
