原作での使用シーン・文化的な背景

使用シーン:

『3年B組金八先生』第1シリーズ(1979〜80年)で、東京の中学校で3年B組を受け持つ国語教師・坂本金八が、15歳の生徒たちに、「人」という字は人と人とが支え合ってできていると語って聞かせる。
In the first series of Kinpachi-sensei (1979-80), Kinpachi Sakamoto, the Japanese-language teacher in charge of class 3-B at a Tokyo middle school, tells his 15-year-old students that the kanji 人 is made of two people supporting each other.

文化的な背景:

武田鉄矢は、このセリフは自分のアドリブだったと思うと語っている。言い回しには少しずつ違う形があり、どの回の場面かははっきりしない。漢字の成り立ちとしては、「人」は一人の人が立つ姿を横から描いたもので、武田自身も後に「支え合ってはいない」と認めている。それでも、助け合いを説く名セリフとして広く知られ、金八先生のものまねでもよく使われる。
Actor Tetsuya Takeda has said he thinks the line was his own ad-lib. It is quoted in slightly different forms, and the exact episode is not clear. As for the kanji's origin, 人 actually comes from a picture of one person standing, seen from the side, and Takeda himself later admitted that it does not show two people supporting each other. Still, it is widely known as a classic line about helping one another, and is often used in impressions of Kinpachi.

英訳文法・学習のポイント

英訳文法のポイント

•「〜という字」は「〜」と書く文字。•「人と人とが」は二つを並べる言い方。•「支え合う」は「支える」に「合う」を付けて、互いにすることを表す。
•「〜という字」= the character called ~. •「人と人とが」= person and person (listing both with と). •「支え合う」= to support each other (支える + 合う).

英訳の注意ポイント

「〜合う」は動詞に付いて「お互いに〜する」を表す(助け合う、話し合う)。また、日常で聞く漢字の説明には、成り立ちとしては正しくない覚え方も多い。
〜合う added to a verb means "each other": 助け合う, 話し合う. Also, many kanji explanations heard in daily life are memory tricks, not true histories of the characters.
