Cultural Context:

The spell was created for the first TV anime (1969) by scriptwriter Shunichi Yukimuro; in the original manga, Akko at first transformed by saying the thing she wanted to become backwards. Akatsuka is reported to have said the spell has no particular meaning. People may also chant it playfully as a magic charm in daily life.

Grammar & Learning Points

Trap for English Speakers

なあれ is not a normal order. 〜になあれ sounds like a gentle magic charm (おいしくなあれ = "be tasty!"), while 強くなれ ("become strong!") is a direct command. Don't use なあれ for real orders.
