Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

In episode 1 of the TV series, an Angel attacks Tokyo-3, and the JSSDF gives up and hands the fight over to NERV. Gendo says he will launch Eva Unit-01. Fuyutsuki points out that they have no pilot. Gendo answers flatly that it is no problem, because a "spare" is about to arrive. The spare is his own son Shinji, who is on his way to NERV with Misato.

Cultural Context:

Gendo says 問題ない again and again in the series, often to Fuyutsuki. Like the "Gendo pose", with his hands folded in front of his face, the line became a symbol of his cold, calculating image. He says it in the same flat voice even when things look far from fine. It may also be used, half-jokingly, in a situation that is clearly not fine.

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「問題」= problem, issue. •「ない」= there is not; the casual negative of ある. No subject and no polite ending, which makes it sound curt.

Trap for English Speakers

問題ない is curt; to a boss or customer, say 問題ありません or 大丈夫です. Also, unlike English "No problem", it is not used as a reply to thanks. For that, say どういたしまして.
