In the final episode of the 1975 anime, Nello has lost his grandfather, his home, and the art contest. On a freezing Christmas Eve he finally sees the Rubens paintings he always dreamed of in Antwerp Cathedral. Holding his loyal dog Patrasche, he says this line and quietly passes away with him.
This ending is a classic "saddest scene in anime" and still appears in TV rankings. Because the line is so well known, people also quote it as a dramatic joke when they are worn out after work or a long trip, often to a pet or a friend. The story is set in Belgium but is far better known in Japan than in Europe.
•「疲れたろう」= "you must be tired" (〜たろう = 〜ただろう, a guess). •「〜んだ」= explaining one's feelings. •「なんだか」= somehow, for some reason.
〜たろう is a bit old-fashioned; today 疲れたでしょ or 疲れたよね is more common. As a joke the line works, but in a real sad situation it can sound flippant.
