Hiromi Oka, a high school tennis player trained by the strict coach Jin Munakata, boards a plane for a tour in America. On the plane she seems to hear his voice say this, although he is not there. At about the same moment, Munakata dies of his illness in hospital.
This is Munakata's last message to Hiromi, and the manga's title comes from it. In the anime it was first animated in New Aim for the Ace! (1978). The words are also used outside the story to encourage someone to aim for the top.
•「岡」= Oka (her family name; calling her). •「エース」= ace (the top player, or an ace serve). •「ねらえ」= aim for (command form of ねらう).
Coaches in Japan often call players by family name only, without さん. It sounds strict, not rude, in sports.
