Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

Early in the story, the legendary actress Chigusa Tsukikage has had her eye on Maya, a poor girl working at a Chinese restaurant. Speaking to Masumi Hayami and Onodera, she asks, "Did you notice?" and reveals that Maya saw the three-and-a-half-hour play La Dame aux Camélias only once and memorized all the lines and acting. Then she laughs, "Oh ho ho ho ho," and says this line.

物語の序盤。伝説の大女優・月影千草は、中華料理店で働く貧しい少女マヤに目を留めていた。月影は速水真澄と小野寺に「気がついて?」と語りかけ、マヤが3時間半の舞台『椿姫』をたった一度見ただけで、セリフも演技も覚えてしまったと明かす。そして「オーホホホホホ」と笑い、このセリフを言う。

Cultural Context:

Together with the form 「マヤ…恐ろしい子」, the line became a standard parody in other manga and anime, with another name swapped in: 「〇〇…恐ろしい子!」. Parodies usually draw the speaker with blank white eyes, but in the original scene Tsukikage does not have white eyes. It may also be used as a joke to praise someone whose talent seems almost scary.

「マヤ…恐ろしい子」の形とともに、ほかの漫画やアニメで「〇〇…恐ろしい子!」と名前を入れ替えてパロディにされる定番のセリフ。パロディでは白目で描かれることが多いが、元の場面の月影は白目ではない。末恐ろしい才能を見せた人を、冗談まじりにほめるときに使うことも考えられる。

Grammar & Learning Points

Grammar Point

•「おそろしい」= frightening; here, frighteningly talented. •「子」= child. • Adjective + noun with no verb makes an exclamation.

•「おそろしい」は怖いほどすごいという意味。•「子」は子ども。•「形容詞+名詞」だけで感嘆を表す言い方。

Trap for English Speakers

This おそろしい is praise, not fear. If you call a real child おそろしい子 when the joke is not clear, it may sound like you find the child creepy.
日本語で読む
ここでの「おそろしい」は怖がっているのではなく、才能への驚きとほめ言葉。冗談だと分からない場面で子どもに言うと、不気味だと思っているように聞こえる。
