Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

Daddy Eyeball, Kitaro's father, has nothing left of his body but an eyeball, and usually rides on Kitaro's head or sits in his hair. When he senses a yokai nearby or notices danger, he calls out to his son with this line and warns him or advises him how to fight. He calls to Kitaro the same way in calm moments at home, such as while soaking in his rice-bowl bath.

Cultural Context:

This is a habitual way of calling his son, not a line from one scene, so there is no single source. It is familiar from impressions of the high, old-man voice of Isamu Tanonaka, who played Daddy Eyeball from the first series in 1968 through the fifth (he died in 2010). Since the sixth series in 2018, Masako Nozawa, who once voiced Kitaro, has played the role. It may be used as a joke when calling a friend whose bangs cover one eye.
