— Kanzo Hattori / Ninja Hattori-kun
Voice sample:
にんにん (Nin nin.)
English Translation:
Nin-nin!
Original Scene & Cultural Context
Scene in the Original Work:
Hattori-kun, a young ninja from Iga, comes to Tokyo and lives with the boy Kenichi. Along with his samurai-style 「〜でござる」, he adds "nin-nin" at the end of what he says, or when he uses his ninja techniques.
日本語で読む
伊賀から東京にやって来て、少年ケンイチの家で暮らす忍者ハットリくん。「〜でござる」という武士のような言葉づかいとともに、話の終わりや、忍法を使うときなどに「ニンニン」と言う。
Cultural Context:
This is a catchphrase used throughout the series, not a line from one single scene. It began as an ad-lib by Junko Hori, who voiced Hattori in the anime, and was later used in the manga too. The series is also popular abroad, for example in India. It may be used as a playful ninja-style sign-off, as in 「では、また明日。ニンニン」.
日本語で読む
一つの場面のセリフではなく、作品を通した口ぐせ。アニメでハットリくんを演じた堀絢子のアドリブから生まれ、のちに原作漫画でも使われるようになった。インドなど海外でも人気の作品。「では、また明日。ニンニン」のように、忍者らしいあいさつとしてふざけて使うこともある。
Grammar & Learning Points
Grammar Point
•「ニン」= echoes 忍 (nin), as in 忍者. • A repeated sound with no grammatical role, like a sound effect. • Hattori also uses old samurai-style words such as 「拙者」 (I) and 「〜でござる」.
日本語で読む
•「ニン」は「忍者」の「忍」を思わせる音。•くり返しの音で、文法的な意味はない。•ハットリくんは「拙者」「〜でござる」という武士のような言葉も使う。
Trap for English Speakers
ニンニン has nothing to do with にんにく (garlic). It is a playful sound, so use it only as a joke or with kids, not in serious talk.
日本語で読む
「ニンニン」は「にんにく」とは関係ない。遊びの音なので、冗談や子ども相手に使う。
