Original Scene & Cultural Context

Scene in the Original Work:

Years after the comet, Taki and Mitsuha, who have lost their memories of each other, catch sight of each other through the windows of two trains running side by side in Tokyo. Both get off and run through the city, and they meet on a staircase. They pass each other in silence, then turn around. Taki says, "I feel like I know you from somewhere," Mitsuha says, "Me too," and in tears they say this line at the same time. The film ends there.

Cultural Context:

The line echoes the film's title, , and the answer is left to the viewer. The staircase of Suga Shrine in Yotsuya, Tokyo, which served as the model for the scene, became a pilgrimage spot for fans. The line may also be used as a joke when you have forgotten to ask the name of someone you just met.
